Suzuki’s V-Strom line has been a strong choice for adventure riders for over 20 years. Offering lots of power, comfortability, and an active aftermarket community, it cemented its reputation as a great all-around bike. For much of its history, V-Stroms among Suzuki’s 2023 lineup have primarily featured a midsize 650 and a 1000 – in 2020, the litre bike was rebirthed as the V-Strom 1050, and this year the Shizuoka-based manufacturer added a new member to the family – the V-Strom 800DE.
Breaking from the tradition of V-Twin engines – the originator of the “V” prefix in its name – the V-Strom 800 features a new 776 cc parallel twin, which churns out a claimed 83hp and 57 lb-ft. Suzuki says this new engine platform allows for a balanced riding experience throughout the rev range. Tying the V-Stroms parallel twin to the 6-speed transmission is the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS), which creates a lighter clutch lever in order to reduce fatigue on longer rides. The new V-Strom also sheds its 600 and 1050cc sibling’s allow frame in favour of a more rugged steel one.
The V-Strom 800 comes equipped with a suite of the Japanese bike manufacturer’s latest technology, including a 5” full-colour LCD instrument panel, selectable drive modes, a traction control system, and multiple ABS modes. From a mechanical standpoint, the bike also has the longest amount of suspension travel & the most ground clearance of any V-Strom model to date, according to Suzuki. Fully adjustable Showa suspension is standard, with inverted front forks and a link-style rear shock. The Suzuki gets a 21-inch front spoked wheel and 17-inch rear setup, both wrapped in the extremely capable Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour tires.
Like the rest of the 2023 V-Strom lineup, the 800 has an optional “Adventure” upgrade package, which, for additional $1,650 USD, adds aluminum panniers, a skid plate, and an engine guard to the V-Strom 800DE package. The adventure package is currently not available for purchase in Canada.
In the United States, the base V-Strom 800 is available in Glass Matte Mechanical Gray, and Champion Yellow No. 2, while the Adventure package is limited to Glass Sparkle Black. The Canadian market V-Strom 800DE is available in all three colourways.
The 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE starts at $11,349 USD / $13,299 CAD.
