The DR650 nameplate goes back over 30 years & Suzuki’s middleweight dual purpose is still going strong. At first glance of Suzuki’s 2023 model lineup, this bike may look like another retro-styled throwback like the 2023 Katana, with its square headlight and old-school graphics, but did the DR650 ever really leave the ‘90s? If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

The Suzuki DR650S, or DR650SE as it is called in the Canadian market, hasn’t received any new features for its 2023 iteration, which means it retains all of its appeal from last year. Some carried-over features include the 644cc single-cylinder thumper, which produces about 43hp and 47 lb-ft of torque. This engine is unique in that it still utilizes a Mikuni 40mm Carburetor for fueling. Internally the thumper uses a Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) coated aluminum cylinder, which helps to keep it lightweight and durable and to promote heat dispersion. Helping turn that horsepower into fun on this Japanese motorcycle is a five-speed transmission and an o-ring chain drive.

The DR650S package is rounded out with height-adjustable front suspension, and a piggyback style rear link suspension which features adjustable height, preload, and compression settings. Thanks to the beefy suspension, the DR650 has 260mm of wheel travel for tackling any terrain that’s thrown at it. Connecting the bike to the road is a set of aluminum spoked wheels measuring 21” up front and 17” in the rear. The DR comes standard with dual sport rubber, which gives the rider ample traction regardless of if they are riding on or off road.

The 2023 iteration of the DR650S is available for purchase in either Solid Black & Iron Gray or Solid Special White No. 2. The Canadian version – the DR650SE, can be had in the same colourways.
