October 16, 2014 – SCHUBERTH introduced the M1 helmet today at the 2014 AIMExpo.

UPDATE: SCHUBERTH M1 review now posted!

This is not a replacement for the funky SCHUBERTH J1 (review), but a new open-face helmet for the product line.

I still use my J1 in hot summer riding and the removable chin “hoop” adds a bit of protection, but no chin bar — removable or otherwise — on the M1.

The M1’s schtick is that it can be customized in up to 4,200 combinations, according to Schuberth, with 5 visors, 6 different flag stickers, 2 linings, 5 different sun visors, 2 peak colors and more..

I’m not sure how 4,200 combos are possible, but there are also 7 different colors, all named after European cities. The top vent comes in metallic silver or black and it can be swapped out by the owner.

The M1 has a new snap-in intercom system made by Cardo for Schuberth.

The intercom has a “boomless” design, but unlike the popular UClear HBC200 (review), the M1 has a mic, it’s just hidden behind the right cheek pad (see photos below).

Every M1 comes with built-in speakers and mic, so all you have to do is buy the optional snap-on intercom module (made by Cardo for Schuberth) and attach it to the back of the helmet and you’re rolling.

The intercom-ready system will eventually be included in all new SCHUBERTH helmets.

The liner has no sewn parts; it’s completely fused together by ultrasonic welding and it looks very sleek and feels comfortable.

The design of the M1 is both traditional and modern at the same time and the metallic SCHUBERTH stylized helmet logo over the rear exhaust is a nice touch. The helmet also has an internal sun visor.

The M1 will be available in Spring of 2015 in sizes ranging from XS to 3XL; only 2 shell sizes will span the head range unfortunately. List price is €399 (~$499.99 USD) and the SRC intercom is €179 for a single and €299 for the dual pack.

The official SCHUBERTH press release is after the photos and be sure to read the SCHUBERTH M1 review!

SCHUBERTH Metropolitan 1 Helmet

(SCHUBERTH press release edited by webBikeWorld, October 2014) – The Metropolitan 1 is for people who believe biking is all about passion, lifestyle and performance.

In other words, it is for anyone who wants an open face helmet that offers top quality, functionality and safety while perfectly complementing their riding gear and personal style.

The many new design options enable a helmet that can have its own individual look. The new open-face helmet is perfect for urban maxi scooters and café racers, complements naked and retro bikes and is the ideal companion on trips with big tourers.

What makes the Metropolitan 1 unique is its wide range of design options. Now riders can customize their helmets to suit their own riding needs and personal style.

When the helmet is launched, the exterior will come in a choice of seven stylish colors. In addition to the classic Vienna White and Berlin Black, other options will include Paris Blue, Madrid Metal, London Matte Black, Rome Red and Amsterdam Anthracite.

The inner lining will be available in grey (standard) and coffee. Other features can also be individually specified, including visors, all of which have an optical Class 1 rating across the whole field of vision. Along with the standard clear visor, other options include 80 percent tint, 40 percent tint, silver mirrored and blue mirrored visors.

Five different sun visors are also available.

In addition to the standard sun visor with an 80 percent tint, there is the option of high-definition yellow, silver mirrored or blue mirrored. All sun visors comply with the latest European standards for sunglasses.

Another great feature is the possibility of removing the visor and replacing it with a peak, which can be simply clicked into place.

The peak gives the helmet a really unusual, attractive look and gives the rider the option of riding without a visor altogether and using only the sun visor for eye protection. The peak comes in titanium (standard) and matt black.

But thats not all; you can also choose whether you want the top ventilation scoop in titanium as standard or in matt black. Top quality gel stickers in the colors of the national flags of Germany, Italy, Great Britain, France, Spain and the USA provide riders with yet another way of customizing their helmets.

They give the Metropolitan 1 a nice international touch.

One of the stylish and distinctive features of the Metropolitan 1 is the design of the new three-dimensional air extraction vents at the back of the helmet. They are made of polished stainless steel and come in the shape of the SCHUBERTH logo.

The outer shell of the Metropolitan 1 is made of a composite glass fiber matrix and comes in two sizes (XS-L, XL-XXL). The small size weighs in at only 1395 grams including communication system prepared.

And of course the Metropolitan 1 has passed the shock absorption test with flying colors.

A world first for helmets: seamless high frequency technology EPS (expanded polystyrene) in varying degrees of hardness has been used for the inner shell of the helmet to ensure the best possible fit and maximum safety.

An even higher level of safety is provided by the patented A.R.O.S (Anti-Roll-Off-System), which ensures that the helmet remains securely in place in an emergency.

The multi-piece inner shell incorporates integrated ventilation channels that create a controlled flow of air through the helmet. The Metropolitan 1 is also the first helmet ever to incorporate seamless high frequency technology fabric welding into the inner lining.

The 3D cut of the inner lining materials ensures maximum comfort. The material is OEKO-TEX 100 certified, antibacterial, breathable and incorporates Shiny-Tex quick-dry technology.

The inner lining can be quickly removed and replaced if required.

New Generation SRC Intercom Communications System

All Metropolitan 1 helmets are designed for use with the SRC-System. Every helmet is fitted with integrated speakers and two concealed microphones. The SRC-System itself is available as an add-on. And to make it even better, SCHUBERTH has elegantly incorporated the system into the helmet design.

Integrating the plug & play SRC-System into the rear of the helmet is child’s play. Up to two riders can communicate with each other using the SRC-System and it is also possible to listen to music. A connection to a mobile phone is made via Bluetooth and voice control is used to activate the main functions (VOX technology).

The basic functions can also be easily adjusted with buttons on the SRC unit. All settings and updates are downloaded wirelessly via an app (iOS and Android). The SRC-System offers 8 hours of talk time.
