Caberg Droid Helmet Review

Caberg Droid Helmet

Forget riding. The contender against Caberg Ghost, the ‘Droid’ feels like it comes straight out of a character from Unreal Tournament. Droid, or ‘An – droid’ in simple terms, means a robot. An autonomous one at that.

So, while Caberg’s lid can not think for itself yet, it can make your head look like the central processing unit of a very advanced and sophisticated machine. Sure, your pretense dream of being one with a mechanized utopia will be shattered when you flip up the chin guard, but it’s all part of the fun. Check price here.

Caberg is known for their safety standards and build quality. You can verify this by checking out their SHARP test ratings and consistent performance. The Droid joins the ranks of the previous soldiers and continues the tradition in a fabulous manner.

What Would You Love?

The design is fantastic. An entire army of futuristic looking helmets is getting churned out by various manufacturers. Not ready to be left behind, Caberg has managed to incorporate that mechanized design and combine it with great aerodynamic, angled shape to give you the Droid.

The helmet is, of course, dual homologated. Combined with the ECE 22.05 rating (sorry, no DOT) you are free to ride around the European Union zone with your chin guard up or down without getting any tickets. The chin guard locks properly in the up or down position with satisfying ‘clicks’ when you flip the locking switch at the rear of the visor mount. Not that the click sound matters but it is a nice thing to hear (hello perfectionists).

As with every other Caberg helmet, they have made it compatible with their own Just Speak S Bluetooth communication system. Whether it’s compatible with other branded com units remains to be tested (and seen).

The Top Features to Look Out For

Aggressive styling, attractive color choices and superior build quality are guaranteed. What works under the hood? Let’s have a look.

Shell

The Droid is made out of a Polycarbonate shell that does not hurt your wallet like the tri composite. It still gives a decent amount of protection being what it is.

There is only one shell size though. Some may argue that it compromises safety but to each his (or her) own. The dimensions give this helmet a compact size, arguably also decreasing the weight of the helmet. At 1600 grams or 3.5 pounds approximately, this lid is neither heavy nor light. Suffice it to say, it should not put a strain on your neck if you plan on riding for too long. But it again depends on how strong the tendons and ligaments in your neck can be.

Visors

A wide angled face shield makes sure, nothing hits your face even when you are trying to kiss the tarmac. It is anti scratch, and can take in a PinLock Max Vision anti fog lens. Caberg has gone out of the way and actually included it in the box, for your pleasure. The quick release system makes sure that you don’t muck around trying to remove the visor for cleaning or for other activities that need it removed.

An inner, anti-scratch sun visor adds a nice Robocop feel and is operated with a lever at the extreme top, which looks a bit embedded in between two short rudders of a fighter plane.

Ventilation

The chin vent system is completely new and looks unique. There are two separate vents which look like knobs used to adjust the AC ventilation on the dashboard of a car. The lower vent is connected to a plastic channel near the nose which blows air on the inner side of the visor to aid in defogging. The upper vent connects to the air channels in the EPS which routes the air around the helmet and over your scalp for an even circulation.

Again, there is no passive exhaust system on the back of the helmet which can suck out the warm, moist air out. Bummer.

Padding and Lining

A breathable or perforated fabric lines up with the helmet edges. It reigns in the cheek pads within and the comfort liner at the top. The cheek pads have been designed so that spectacles or glasses can be worn while wearing the helmet as well.

The fabric and liner is hypoallergenic and can be removed and washed without bother. Just don’t chuck them in the washing machine.

A removable chin curtain prevents chilly air from ruining your ride in colder climates.

Customer Reviews

Giving out a 4-star rating overall, most customers were a little disappointed with the tight fitting of their glasses and spectacles despite provisions in the cheek pads. Most compared this with the Duke which seemed to be more popular than this lid.

Bottom Line

Flip-face helmets are not meant to be quiet, notwithstanding the best efforts in that direction from many manufacturers. As far as safety and features are concerned, this is a decent attempt by Caberg to put out a modernized helmet and make a fashion statement. It is still new and has to undergo numerous customer trials to prove its worth over the competition, from other brands as well as some of Caberg’s own.

Nevertheless, it is a strong entry and worth your attention if you are looking for a change or need to add one lid to your collection of splendid looking helmets.
