BMW Motorcycles Reports Sales for 2004
March 10, 2005 - The BMW Group reported an overall
net profit of 2,222 million euro, up 14.1% from 2003,
which had a profit of 1,947 million euro. The BMW
Motorrad division of the BMW Group reported a total of
92,266 motorcycles sold worldwide, just 0.7% below the
record sales volume achieved in 2003 of 92,962 units.
The reported results of the motorcycles segment in 2004
have been affected by the substantial level of up-front
expenditure for new models.
BMW Motorcycles USA Posts Second Best Year in
Company History
BMW Motorcycles (BMW Motorrad USA) today reported
sales of 13,316 units in the USA for 2004. This is
the second best year of motorcycle sales in the
company's history.
BMW said that the strong sales performance was
largely due to increased sales of the R1150RT model,
despite the fact that it was in its final production
year and will be replaced with the
R1200RT
in March.
BMW's GS models accounted for the second highest
volume, reflecting the popularity of the
R1200GS,
which has garnered several prestigious awards from the
motorcycle press since its introduction in early 2004,
including
Cycle World's Best Open-Class Streetbike for 2004,
and Motorcyclist's Motorcycle of the Year.
The updated K 1200 LT models finished the year with
the third highest volume and received further accolades
including
Cycle World's Best Touring Bike of the Year. The
motorcycle's innovative electro-hydraulic center stand
has received kudos from both consumers and the
motorcycle press.
Collectively, sales of RT, GS and LT models accounted
for 51% of BMW motorcycle sales in 2004. Several model
BMW motorcycles reached the final phase of their
production life cycle in 2004, including the R1200C,
R1200 Montauk, the R1200CLC, the K1200RS, the R1150RS
and the R1150RT.
BMW Motorcycle accessories and after-sales posted a
record year with parts and accessories sales up 4
percent over 2003.
BMW Motorrad USA also announced that several
innovative technological features will be introduced on
its models in the near future, including a wireless
communication system between rider and passenger, as
well as other motorcycles and a satellite radio that
will be integrated into the current communication
systems on models such as the K 1200 LT.
