This book serves as a primary guide to BMW motorcycle model history for anyone interested in the marque. It was last updated in 1996, just as the latest generation of “oilheads” were being sold throughout the world, and, as such, is a bit outdated.

But it is a good primer of BMW motorcycle history and it has some good information on model differentiation. It also is written with a breezy, easy to digest style.

There are many good photos and illustrations; however, you may find that the one model you have a particular interest in isn’t illustrated as well as you like, due to the compromises that must be made regarding the amount of text vs. photos in a book of this genre.

However, it’s a great reference guide, and helpful to anyone who may need to identify an older BMW — which normally may be difficult, due to the strength of the boxer design and it’s gradual evolution through the decades.

Three helmets if you have a passing interest in the marque; four helmets if you’re a BMW fanatic!
