Bike Of The Day: 1987 BMW K100LT Café Racer

The Retro Rebuilds workshop in Rockford, Michigan transformed a 1987 BMW K100LT motorcycle into a stylish cafe racer. The bike underwent various modifications to achieve its new aesthetic.

The cafe racer features a 5.8-gallon fuel tank painted in blue, contrasting with the black-painted tubular space frame and custom subframe. The seat is a custom black solo saddle with a sport hump and a seating surface made of quilted suede-like material.

The lighting setup includes a projector headlight secured by Speed Moto brackets, a frame-mounted strip taillight, and turn signals integrated with the taillight at the rear. The front turn signals are mounted to the fork.

To enhance the performance and handling, the front end of a Suzuki GSX-R was fitted to the motorcycle using a Cognito Moto steering stem conversion kit. This includes an inverted adjustable fork with gold sliders, dual Tokico disc brakes, and a black-finished three-spoke alloy wheel.

The rear retains the stock 17″ Y-spoke alloy wheel finished in black and a single disc brake with a gold-finished Brembo caliper. Both the front and rear wheels are equipped with Shinko 705 Trail Master dual-sport tires manufactured in 2019. The rear suspension is provided by a black adjustable monoshock mounted to a single-sided swingarm, which also serves as the driveshaft enclosure.

The handlebars are black clip-ons fitted with gunmetal gel grips and dual mirrors. They are mounted beneath a Suzuki GSX-R top triple clamp, which secures the Cognito Moto mounting bracket for a 120-mph SpeedHut GPS speedometer with an inset 12k-rpm tachometer.

Powering the bike is a liquid-cooled 987cc horizontal inline-four engine. The engine is mounted longitudinally and features double overhead camshafts, an aluminum block, Bosch LE-Jetronic engine management, an electric starter, and a four-into-one stainless-steel exhaust system with a custom muffler. The factory-rated output of the engine is 89 horsepower and 63 lb-ft of torque.
