Suzuki Australia has issued a safety recall of its GSX-S1000 and GSX-R1000 motorcycles over a fluid leak in the front brakes.

The Australian Competition and Conusmer Commission notice says it concerns the models Suzuki GSX-S1000 A/FA L6 and GSX-R1000A L6 with various VIN numbers, so it’s advisable owners contact their dealer to see if their bike is affected.

The defect is in the front brake caliper which may leak brake fluid due to an even piston seal surface, caused by entry of the outer coating treatment into the piston bore during production.

This is a safety issue because brake fluid could leak out on to the wheel which could cause loss of traction.

It’s also an aesthetic issue as brake fluid can also be damaging to paintwork.

Owners should take their bike to an authorised Suzuki dealer to have it inspected and the “counter measure parts” fitted for free.

It is not known whether there have been any incidents caused by this issue and the safety recall does not appear to be global.

It’s the third safety recall for the GSX-R1000 in the past three years for brake and chain issues.

YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS ON RECALLS

Recall notices are issued by the manufacturer through a voluntary industry code under the ACCC.

Despite hundreds of recalls by various automotive manufacturers, none has ever been mandatory.  All have been issued by the manufacturer.

While any recall is not good news for the manufacturer, it shows that they are largely diligent in fixing problems.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.
