A Flying Motorcycle Would be Awesome

I’m a bit of a sucker for big ideas. I love the thought of a flying motorcycle, so The Speeder from JetPack Aviation is right up my alley. From the Jetsons to Star Wars flying cars and motorcycles have pretty much always been in people mind as the next big thing in transportation that always seems to be a decade or so away. Well, JetPack Aviation, a Californian company, may have finally cracked the flying bike code.

The Speeder features five jet engines under the bike (hoverbike?) that provide the thrust needed to get off the ground and travel around. Those engines make a whopping 12,000 pounds of max thrust in its most powerful form. That makes The Speeder good for a 150 mph top speed. The bike can travel up to 30 minutes between fill-ups and go up 15,000 feet in the air.

The company appears to have a couple of different versions of it. There’s one that people can ride and one that is designed for cargo. The one for everyday people has a slightly less powerful 705 pounds of max thrust and can go for 22 minutes before needing to refuel.

It looks like JetPack Aviation is trying to sell these to the public, to companies, and to the military. Unfortunately, to use the flying bike, you’d have to have a private pilot’s license. The good news is that if you have a license JetPack Aviation will teach you how to ride/fly their machine. If all that doesn’t dissuade you then you can send in $10,000 for a pre-order.
