Man packs full-frame folded electric bike into car boot

On the hunt for the best folding eBikes under $1500? We’ve taken 10 of our top picks, chosen for their performance, value for money, design, build quality, and more. All of the models you see on this list come from reputable brands, with good reviews from real customers.

As with the nature of folding eBikes, their utility is mostly limited to casual riders and commuters. However, we still found a few folding fat-tire ebike models with off-road functionality.

Let’s begin our list of the 10 best folding eBikes for budgets under $1500, formatted in order of performance and price:

#1: eAhora X7-Azarias 750W – $1,299

The X7-Azarias from eAhora has to be one of the best folding eBikes available in this price range. It remains one of the best-received models on the market, with over 650+ five-star reviews from real customers.

The X7 is cheaper than the following Ecotric and ENGWE models, whilst packing a bigger punch in performance, with no assembly required. The 20” fat tires offer great grip on a number of terrains, allowing riders to ride both on/off-road.

eAhora X7-Azarias fat-tire folding eBike on road with kickstandVia eAhora.

A removable 48V 18Ah lithium-ion battery charges the sizable 750W motor; powering a bright 5V headlight whilst also allowing for speeds of up to ~24 mp/h and journeys of up to 44-55 miles. This is extended to upwards of 100 miles when utilising pedal assist, one of 3 riding modes.

From empty, the X7-Azarias takes just 4-6 hours to fully charge and can be charged in or out of the bike frame.

Core features:

  • 750W motor
  • 20” x 4” Fat tires
  • Great build quality
  • Integrated lighting
  • Adjustable front fork
  • 48V 18Ah Li-ion battery
  • Arrives fully assembled
  • Fast charging time of 4-6 hours
  • Lighter than competitors (23 kg)
  • Incredible performance (speed/range)
  • 2 variants to choose from (mid or low-step)

The overall build quality is brilliant, utilising a rust-proof aluminium alloy frame and front fork, with responsive 160mm dual mechanical disc brakes. All of this gives it a weight of 52 lbs (23 kg), lighter than similar competitors.

We believe the X7-Azarias is easily one of the best folding eBikes on the market, and not even the most expensive on our list. See it for yourself here, or continue reading for more of the best folding electric bikes under $1500.

#2: ENGWE Engine Pro 750W – $1,489.99

Starting off with an upgraded model of the ENGWE 750W, this fat-tire folding eBike offers both on and off-road functionality coupled with the same sizable motor. This is powered by a removable 48V/12.5Ah lithium-ion battery, operating for ~40-50 miles per charge; surprisingly for such a compact design.

Described as an ‘electric mountain bike’, this model features an 8-speed transmission system and a top speed of 22 mp/h.

Core features:

  • Free shipping
  • Cruise control
  • 3 riding modes
  • 1-year warranty
  • Dual suspension
  • Regenerative braking
  • Rear cargo fender
  • Worldwide shipping
  • Great speed/mileage
  • A little heavy (37.8 kg)
  • Good at handling hills
  • Fat tires/off-road functionality
  • Removable 48V/12.5Ah li-ion battery

Despite its small aluminium frame, this model is quite heavy at 37.8 kg—about the same as a full-frame eBike. However, this also means it’s strong, withstanding weights of up to 150 kg (330 lbs).

The rear cargo fender is a useful addition, especially for commuters. ENGWE further added regenerative braking to this model, which generates battery power from kinetic energy. Watch this in-depth YouTube review for more information on this eBike.

Although on the upper end of our budget, we were very impressed with both the features and performance packed into this little monster.

#3: ENGWE EP-2 PRO 750W – $1,399.99

ENGWE EP-2 Pro folding off-road electric bike on grass in fieldVia Tech Reviewer.

Another great model from ENGWE, the EP-2 Pro folding fat-tire eBike is their original design, minus the rear cargo fender and extra suspension. As a slightly downgraded version of the Engine Pro, the EP-2 Pro still offers very similar performance, barring a couple of features.

Core features:

  • 750W motor
  • 3 riding modes
  • 20″ x 4″ fat-tires
  • Charges in 5-7 hours
  • 7-speed gear indexing
  • Mechanical disc brakes
  • Supports up to 150 kg (330 lbs)
  • Great torque/hill-climbing capacity
  • Removable 48V/12.8Ah Li-ion battery
  • Range of approx. 50+ miles per charge
  • Top speed of ~28 mp/h (45 km/h)

Still powered by a removable 48V battery and mighty 750W motor, the EP-2 Pro makes for a slightly cheaper choice than the Engine, although it skips out on the additional dual suspension and cruise control. With these two so similar in price and performance, some buyers will feel confused about what to choose.

Personally, we believe the upgraded ‘Engine Pro’ to be well worth the extra ~$90, but this model is still great for serious riders. We recommend purchasing directly from ENGWE for free shipping and 1-year warranty. Learn about this model in greater detail here.

#4: Ecotric 48V Fat Tire – $1,299

Described as the “flagship model” of the FAT 20” series, Ecotric have done a great job making this model. Interestingly, it includes a slightly bigger 48V 15Ah battery than the ENGWE eBikes, still fully removable and utilising lithium-ion cells.

This allows for a mighty mileage of up to 45 miles, which is incredible for a folding eBike. The design is very similar to the ‘Engine Pro’, including the rear cargo fender, fat-tires and BMX style design. Although at 63 lbs (28.6 kg), this model is slightly lighter than the competing ENGWE eBikes.

Core features:

  • 500W motor
  • Range: 45 miles
  • Top speed: 20 mp/h
  • Big 48V 15Ah battery
  • 7-speed gear indexing
  • Mechanical disc brakes
  • Colour USB LCD display
  • Exposed battery (within frame)
  • Battery Management System
  • Free shipping and returns
  • 18-month warranty
  • 20” x 4” fat-tires
  • 3 riding modes

The performance of this eBike is slightly behind competitors, likely on account of the 500W motor. Despite this, the top speed of 20 mp/h is very close to matching both listed ENGWE models.

One aspect we weren’t particularly fond of was the exposed battery, and we found no mention of waterproofing outside of the LCD. Regardless, the overall performance and features offered are remarkably close to matching the first two models on our list; despite remaining at least $100 cheaper.

View the listing for this model here. If this isn’t the one for you, Ecotric stocks a huge variety of competitively priced folding eBikes; we recommend viewing their full range now.

#5: SDREAM Ur 500X – Folding Commuter eBike – $1,199.99

Moving past the fat-tire models, the ‘SDREAM Ur 500X’ is a more traditional approach to a folding eBike. It adopts a sleek and lightweight design best suited to roadsides and other urban environments, weighing in at just 46.5 lbs (21.1 kg).

This is thanks to a strong and sturdy magnesium alloy frame, supporting weights of up to 220 lbs (100 kg). SDREAM describes the Ur 500X as a ‘commuter electric bike,’ and in fairness, it offers superb performance and utility for the price.

Although its range is a little lower than others on this list, it still proves more than enough for inner-city commuters; especially when combined with a rapid 4 hour charge time (2.5 hours with an optional fast charger). This makes the UX 500X the fastest charging eBike on our list.

Core features:

  • 500W motor
  • 5 riding modes
  • Great suspension
  • Smart LCD display
  • 1-year warranty included
  • 36V/7.8Ah Li-ion battery

#6: LECTRIC XP 2.0 – $1,199.99

The Lectric XP 2.0 seems to be one of the most versatile on our list. It is capable of operating as either a class 1, 2, or 3 eBike, thanks to a selection of 5 riding modes. Learn about eBike classifications in our US PLEV law article here.

An integrated 48V 9.6Ah lithium-ion battery powers the integrated front/rear lighting and a 500W motor, with a peak output of ~850W. This allows for a decent top speed of up to 28 mp/h and good uphill acceleration.

This performance is complemented by puncture-resistant 20” fat tires, lending great grip on a variety of terrains. We were also quite impressed with the build quality of this eBike, featuring 160mm mechanical disc brakes, adjustable front fork suspension, and an IP65 waterproof rating.

Weighing in at 64 lbs (29 kg) and supporting 330 lbs (150 kg), this eBike is not the lightest on our list; although the spring-suspension seat makes it one of the most comfortable.

Core features:

  • Top speed: 28 mp/h

Whilst we feel it would be better with a removable battery, riders still average approx. 45 miles from a single 4-6 hour charge. Overall, this is a very well-received model, with over 750+ five-star reviews from verified buyers.

Lectric clearly places confidence in their quality control too, offering 1 year of warranty for all purchases. All of this puts the Lectric XP 2.0 as one of the 10 best folding eBikes for under $1,500. See it for yourself now!

The ‘Heybike Mars’ is another fantastic fat-tire folding model, packing great power and performance into its compact frame. A fully removable 48V 12.5Ah battery results in ranges of 37 miles (throttle only) to 48 miles (pedal assist).

This powers the 500W geared motor, capable of reaching speeds of up to 20 mp/h from throttle only, whilst also offering decent uphill performance. There are 3 riding modes, each with varying levels of speed and power; coupled. with 7-speed gear Shimano indexing for extra control.

This model seemingly responds well under stress, with a dual front fork and seat post suspension absorbing sharp shocks and other hits. This helps maintain a smooth ride and minimises the risk of losing control; also making for a very comfortable ride.

Dual disc brakes offer sharp and responsive stopping power, which is important wherever you ride. The integrated rear cargo rack is a nice addition, alongside the USB port for charging electronics.

  • Competitively priced
  • 500W geared motor

Overall, there is quite a bit of utility hidden within the Heybike Mars. The integrated lighting helps with visibility whilst further granting safer riding during all hours of the day. We believe this really is a great pick for commuters and off-road thrill-seekers alike.

As such, we couldn’t help but choose this model for its price, build quality, and overall versatility; much like the rest on this list. We recommend purchasing directly from the official Heybike site to best benefit from the free 2-year warranty.

#8: Ecotric 48V – $969.99

Another awesome addition, the ‘Ecotric 48V Gold, a slightly downgraded and cheaper variant of the previously featured model from Ecotric. Featuring a 48V/13Ah battery with a charge time of 5-8 hours and a smart battery management system, this eBike offers a range of up to ~45 miles.

The 500W brushless motor allows riders to reach speeds of up to 23-28 mp/h, with 5 riding modes to choose from. This is all done through the smart LCD display, which also displays battery life, total mileage, speed, and more.

The aluminium alloy frame is sturdy, although somewhat heavy for a folding eBike at 56 lbs (25 kg); around the same weight as the X7-Azarias. This allows it to support weights of up to 200 lbs (90 kg).

We were especially impressed with the 20” x 4” anti-puncture, “explosion-proof” fat tires. Learn all about tire safety from this video. The only thing we would change is the brakes. Mechanical disc brakes are great, but their hydraulic counterparts are more responsive.

Core features:

  • Speed: 23-28 mp/h
  • Range: 45 miles
  • 5 riding modes
  • Smart LCD display
  • Charges in 5-8 hours

  • Supports weights of up to 200 lbs (90 kg)
  • Competitively priced
  • Weighs 56 lbs (25.4 kg)

Whilst this model might fall behind in some aspects compared to the rest on our list, it is still very close to matching the best. At the time of writing, all reviews for this eBike are positive and between 4-5 stars. View the ‘Ecotric 48V Gold’ listing here, or continue reading for the Vivi S1 foldable mountain eBike!

#9: Vivi S1 Mountain eBike – $715.99

A full-sized folding mountain eBike proves a very uncommon design in the industry. The VIVI S1 is truly a rare find for such a great price, with VIVI also providing an extensive range of similarly priced, fully folding electric mountain bikes.

Despite the competitive price, the build quality and features offered from this eBike are great. It’s strong and sturdy, supporting weights of up to 310 lbs (140 kg) and boasting an IP54 waterproof rating.

Its full-length frame allows riders to put more power into their pedaling, further complemented by a 21-speed gear shifter. Our only major gripe is that there is no digital display and that we do not know a lot about VIVI as a brand. Also, it appears that they currently only ship to the U.S.

Alongside this, the speed and range remain mostly average, although some reviews claim approx. ~50 miles per charge (unconfirmed).

Core features:

  • Speed: Up to 20 mp/h
  • Range: Up to 40 miles (pedal assist)
  • 350W motor
  • Competitively priced
  • Weighs 57 lbs (26 kg)
  • 36V/10.4Ah Li-ion battery
  • Front & rear disc brakes
  • IP54 waterproof rated
  • 21-speed gear shifter

  • Free shipping on all orders
  • No mention of digital display
  • Currently only ship to the U.S
  • Full-frame, folding mountain eBike
  • Supports weights of up to ~310 lbs (140 kg)
  • No mention of warranty on VIVI website, 1 year on Amazon listing

Whilst missing a few features, this is a unique design of good quality and feels well worth the price. See the S1 for yourself here, or view the similarly performing VIVI M026TGB in action. Otherwise, continue reading for more of the best folding eBikes under $1500!

From our perspective, this compact eBike offers great performance for the price. View this model now, or continue reading for our conclusion.
