Race 1 - Airwaves Ducati pilot, Leon Camier stole the limelight from
teammate Shane Byrne to claim victory in the opening 20-
lap Superbike race at Croft, North Yorkshire (14 September).
All eyes were on the battle between Championship
leader Shane Byrne and his main contender, Tom Sykes, as Cal Crutchlow took
the holeshot into Clervaux from his third pole position of the season.
Tom Sykes lay down the gauntlet to Byrne by
sliding his Rizla Suzuki into the lead at the Hairpin at the culmination of
the opening lap. Looking to make the early break, Sykes led the
four-bike break from Haslam, Crutchlow and Byrne.
Camier, starting from the second row, muscled
his way past fellow Ducati rider Michael Rutter, before hunting down
the leading quartet. In-form rider, Leon Haslam made a perfect pass at
Tower to take the lead from Sykes on lap 7, and looked odds-on to claim his
fourth win on the bounce.
However, by lap 8, Camier was on the move,
passing teammate Byrne for fourth, then taking third after a Cal Crutchlow
error the following lap. With Sykes and Haslam in his sights, Camier
made the text-book pass at the Complex for second, and with clear track
ahead, set about catching race leader Haslam.
The decisive move came on lap 13. Camier
out-braked the HM Honda of Haslam into the sharp right hand Tower
Bend, and using the low-down grunt of the Ducati pulled clear to head for
home and his second race win of the
season.
With Haslam all but assured of second, the
three-way race was on for the final podium slot. Byrne moved onto the
bottom step on the penultimate lap only to lose out to Sykes on the final
corner. This would be the first time this
season that Byrne would not stand on the podium at the end of a race, but
maintains his chance to claim the title in
race 2.
Leon Camier, Winner Race 1: "It’s
fantastic to be up here on the top step again this season. A big
thanks to the whole Airwaves Ducati squad for their hard work this weekend."
Race 2 - Leon Haslam made the decisive
pass on the penultimate lap to claim his fourth victory of the season in the
second Superbike race at Croft (14 September). With Shane Byrne just
needing to finish ahead of Haslam and Sykes to claim the title, the champion
elect made an uncustomary poor start from the lights, hampered by a missed
gear, that saw his cross the line in tenth position after the opening lap.
HM Plant Honda’s Cal Crutchlow made the early
running, taking the holeshot from pole as he led the five-bike break
at the head of the field.
Race 1 winner, Leon Camier almost collided with
Michael Rutter as the NW200 Ducati rider ran wide into the Hairpin on lap 3,
allowing Camier to steal the narrow strip of tarmac on the inside line.
Further down the field, Shane Byrne was on the
move, swiftly despatching the riders between himself and teammate
Leon Camier. Tom Sykes made a stock passing move into the Hairpin for
the lead at mid-race distance, the place-swapping at the front allowing
Byrne the necessary time to claw his Ducati onto their tail end.
As the race reached its crescendo over the
closing laps, Haslam swept under Sykes at Tower for the lead on the
penultimate lap, instantly pulling clear to claim his fourth win in five
races. Meanwhile, Byrne looked every which way for a passing maneuver
to stick on Crutchlow but to no avail.
Crossing the line in fourth, Byrne lost the
chance to wrap up the title two rounds early, but retains a championship
lead of 94 points with just four races and 100 points left on the table.
Buildbase NW200 Ducati rider, John Laverty wrapped up the Superbike Daily
Star Cup title after two further mature performances.
The penultimate round of the season takes place
at Silverstone, Northamptonshire (26-28 September).
Leon Haslam, Winner Race 2: “I felt that
I had done enough to win the first race, but the points from both have
moved me up into second in the title race. Byrne was a little unlucky,
but that’s racing and now the title can go on until Silverstone at least.
A big thanks to HM Plant Honda for working so hard on my bike this weekend.”
